About Auckland
Auckland region's 4WD scene sits largely in the Hunua Ranges to the south-east and the Waitematā/Rodney forestry blocks to the north. Most locals drive an hour or two out of the city to reach quality off-road terrain — the immediate surrounds are suburban.
The Hunua Ranges Regional Park has a limited network of 4WD-accessible tracks managed by Auckland Council. The Woodhill Mountain Bike Park south of Wellsford has a vehicle access component. North of the city, the Kaipara backroads and the Matakana forestry fringe offer mild day-trip driving.
Auckland's proximity to the Coromandel Peninsula (Bay of Plenty region boundary) means most Auckland-based 4WD drivers do their serious off-roading there or further south in Waikato and the King Country.

Frequently asked questions
Are there 4WD tracks accessible within an hour of Auckland city?
The Hunua Ranges Regional Park (south-east Auckland) and Woodhill Forest near Helensville both have 4WD-accessible tracks within 60–90 minutes of central Auckland. The Hunua tracks are mild — good for vehicle familiarisation. Woodhill has a broader network but most is mountain bike-focused; check for vehicle access areas specifically. The Coromandel Peninsula (1.5–2 hours) offers far more variety.
