4WDing near Auckland
Auckland drivers have the Coromandel Peninsula to the east (1.5 hours) as their primary serious 4WD destination, and the Waitākere Ranges to the west for easier day-trip terrain. Within the city boundary, the Hunua Ranges Regional Park to the south-east has a limited network of 4WD tracks managed by Auckland Council.
The Coromandel is the standout weekend destination — the forestry tracks off the Tapu-Coroglen Road, the Kauaeranga Valley tracks, and the Coromandel Town back-roads give a full day of varied terrain. Northland's Far North (including Ninety Mile Beach) is 3–4 hours and requires overnight planning.
The Woodhill Mountain Bike Park north of Auckland has some vehicle access areas but is primarily managed for mountain biking — check current vehicle access sections before driving. Year-round access is possible around Auckland with no alpine closures in the immediate region.
