Hard 4WD Tracks
17 hard tracks in Tasmania.
Hard 4WD tracks demand an experienced driver and a well-equipped vehicle. Loose shale sidehills, axle-deep crossings, tight shelf roads, steep descents with limited run-out, and sections where a mistake has real consequences — this is the terrain Hard-rated tracks deliver.
A rear locker is recommended for most Hard tracks. A front locker and a winch are recommended for the harder end of the rating. Your recovery kit should be complete and every piece of it should have been tested in anger before you commit to a Hard track alone.
What to expect on a Hard 4WD track
- Highly variable surface — shale, clay, deep ruts, embedded rocks
- Steep climbs and descents at 35–50%, some with off-camber approaches
- Water crossings that may exceed 500 mm in typical conditions
- Tight tracks with limited passing room and no margin for error
- Often remote — recovery may be many hours away
Vehicle requirements for Hard tracks
A well-prepared high-clearance 4WD with low-range, a rear locker minimum, all-terrain or mud-terrain tyres in good condition, a full-size spare, a complete recovery kit (including a winch on harder routes), and dual batteries if you plan to use the winch significantly. Engine snorkel is recommended where water crossings are involved.
Driver experience needed
You should have meaningful off-road experience — ideally with a recovery or 4WD training course completed. Hard tracks are not the place to learn how to use recovery gear for the first time. Know your vehicle's limits and your own. Know how to self-recover. Do not attempt Hard tracks solo without a detailed trip plan filed with someone responsible.
Checking conditions before a Hard track
A track rated Hard in dry conditions can become impassable after significant rainfall. Steep loose surfaces absorb water quickly and lose grip dramatically. Always check recent conditions on Newtracs before departure, and consult the relevant land manager (Parks Victoria, NPWS, DOC, etc.) for current status.
