4WDing near Darwin
Darwin is the base for the NT's Top End 4WD season — but the season is strictly defined. The dry season (May through October) delivers excellent accessible 4WD from Darwin; the wet (November through April) floods most tracks and closes Kakadu and Litchfield access roads.
In the dry season, Litchfield National Park (90 minutes south) is the most popular day-trip destination — accessible creek crossings, waterfalls, and magnetic termite mounds, all within a standard high-clearance 4WD capability. Kakadu National Park (3 hours east) extends the range considerably, with the Jim Jim Falls access road being the headline 4WD track.
The Arnhem Highway back-tracks and the South Alligator River access give medium-difficulty driving within a day trip of Darwin. Arnhem Land itself requires Northern Land Council permits — these are multi-day expeditions, not day trips.
