The Kimberley is Australia's top-shelf 4WD destination. Larger than Germany, emptier than most, and lined with gorges, waterfalls, and river crossings that demand a fully equipped vehicle and serious planning. The Gibb River Road is the backbone, with the Mitchell Plateau, the Bungle Bungles, and the Kalumburu Road adding extensions that can fill weeks.

The Kimberley is dry-season only — May through September with some flexibility at the shoulder months. In the wet season, the rivers don't just rise; they make roads disappear entirely. Long-range fuel, dual batteries, a snorkel, and a recovery kit are standard equipment. A satellite communicator is not optional.
