About West Coast
The West Coast is one of New Zealand's most dramatic and least-visited 4WD destinations. Glaciers, rainforest, grey sand beaches, and the Southern Alps on one side and the Tasman Sea on the other. The Buller and Grey River basins, the Haast district, and the Westland fiord fringe each offer distinct driving character.
Paparoa National Park and the Paparoa Range tracks, the Hokitika Gorge access, the Lake Ianthe and Okarito coastal tracks, and the Jackson Bay back-country all reward 4WD drivers willing to manage the mud. The West Coast road from Greymouth to Haast (SH6) is sealed but the true off-road network is on gravel and clay.
