Melbourne is the best-positioned major Australian city for serious 4WD driving. The Victorian High Country begins roughly 150 km north-east of the CBD — a two-hour drive puts you on the Wonnangatta Valley access road or the foothills of the Great Dividing Range. The Dandenong Ranges to the east give easier day-trip terrain.

The main zones within a day trip of Melbourne: the Yarra Valley and Upper Yarra fringe (easy, under 90 minutes), the Toolangi State Forest (medium, 1.5–2 hours), Marysville and the Cathedral Range State Park (easy-medium, 1.5 hours), the Wonnangatta Valley (medium-hard, 2.5 hours), and the main High Country destinations around Licola, Jamieson, and Mansfield (hard and above, 2–3 hours).
