About Otway Ranges
The Otway Ranges run along the Great Ocean Road coast, and their 4WD network sits mostly within the Otway National Park and the Great Otway National Park conservation area. The tracks here are forest tracks — green, wet in winter, and noticeably different in character from the dry alpine terrain of the High Country.
Forrest to Wye River via Turtons Track is the most-known Otways 4WD route — a forest 4WD track that requires low-range but isn't technically extreme. The back-roads out of Colac towards Beech Forest and along the Barwon River give additional options. The southern coastal fringe around Princetown and Johanna has some vehicle beach access.
The Otways receive significant rainfall year-round. Tracks can be deeply rutted and muddy in winter. Summer gives the most reliable conditions. Always check Great Otway National Park closures — the wet-forest environment is sensitive and Parks Victoria closes tracks after significant rainfall to prevent damage.

Frequently asked questions
Is Turtons Track in the Otways suitable for a standard 4WD?
Turtons Track (Forrest to Wye River) is achievable in a capable high-clearance 4WD with good low-range gearing and all-terrain tyres. The track is steep in places and muddy after rain — it's a proper low-range route, not a gravel cruise. Check Great Otway National Park current conditions before going; it closes after significant rain events to protect the wet-forest surface.
