About The Grampians
The Grampians (Gariwerd) rise dramatically from the flat western Victoria plains, and their sandstone ridges and forested eastern faces hide a network of 4WD tracks that most visitors drive past on their way to the main lookouts. The tracks here are lower-difficulty than the High Country but the scenery is outstanding.
Grampians National Park manages vehicle access through a combination of sealed roads and unsealed 4WD tracks. The Serra Range and the Mount William area have track networks suited to high-clearance 4WDs. The northern Grampians near Halls Gap and Wartook give more technical terrain with creek crossings and forest tracks.
Year-round driving is generally possible in the Grampians — the altitude is lower than the High Country and significant snow is rare. Summer is the most reliable but also the busiest. Spring (September–November) brings wildflowers and excellent conditions. Always check Parks Victoria for current closures — the national park uses a rolling closure system for fire management and habitat protection.
