4WDing near Hobart
Hobart is encircled by state forest and reserves, and the accessible 4WD terrain begins within 30 minutes of the city. The Derwent Valley to the north-west gives access to the Central Highlands and the southern end of the Central Plateau. The Huon Valley to the south connects to the Southwest National Park fringe and Cockle Creek.
The Tahune Forest Reserve and the Geeveston–Hartz Mountains area are 60–90 minutes south. Cockle Creek (the southernmost road in Tasmania, and arguably Australia) is 90 minutes via Port Arthur or 2 hours via Geeveston — a spectacular drive through the Southwest National Park that ends on a beautiful beach.
