About Simpson Desert
The Simpson Desert is Australia's bucket-list dunefield — 1100 parallel sand dunes, including Big Red (Nappanerica), running north-south across the QLD/NT/SA tri-state border. The east-west crossing from Birdsville to Mt Dare (or Dalhousie Springs) covers roughly 600 km of deep desert and requires two vehicles, full expedition preparation, and dry-season timing.
A Desert Parks Pass (SA) is required for the SA section of the Simpson. QLD national park fees apply at the QLD entry. The Rig Road (the most direct east-west route) and the French Line give the main crossing options. Big Red is the most photographed and the most popular first dune of the crossing — it's steep, soft, and often crowded on weekends in peak season.
