4WD Tracks in Flinders Ranges

The Flinders Ranges stretch 430 km from Port Pirie to Arkaroola — ancient folded quartzite and sandstone ridges rising from the SA outback. The 4WD network here is varied: from the family-accessible Rawnsley Bluff circuit to the serious 4WD country at Arkaroola's Ridge-Top Tour in the northern Flinders.

Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park has good unsealed access roads. The Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges in the north are more remote and technically demanding. Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary runs guided Ridge-Top Tours in the northern Flinders — the most dramatic vehicle-accessible terrain in SA.

Best conditions run from May through October. Summer heat (40°C+) makes outback SA driving uncomfortable and potentially dangerous in a breakdown. Winter nights are cold but the days are ideal. The Flinders receive less rainfall than eastern Australia and tracks dry quickly.
