4WDing near Cairns
Cairns is the departure point for two of Australia's greatest 4WD journeys — Cape York to the north and the Daintree to the north-west. Within the Cairns region itself, the Tablelands road network, the Atherton Tablelands back-roads, and the Yarrabah area give accessible day-trip terrain.
The Gillies Highway to the Atherton Tablelands has unsealed back-road options off the main route. The Daintree River crossing (cable ferry, private vehicle) and the Bloomfield Track (Cape Tribulation to Cooktown via the ranges) are the headline drives within 3 hours of Cairns. The Bloomfield Track requires a snorkel for the Roaring Meg Creek crossing in the dry season.
The wet season (December through April) closes the Bloomfield Track and makes Cape York inaccessible. Cairns is a dry-season base for Far North Queensland 4WD. Cyclone season (December through April) can affect access with little notice.
