4WDing near Brisbane
Brisbane's closest 4WD terrain is the D'Aguilar Range (Dayboro and Woodford direction) and the Glasshouse Mountains hinterland to the north — both within 60–90 minutes. The Conondale Range (Kenilworth area) extends the range to 2 hours for more serious terrain. To the south, the Lamington National Park fringe and the Scenic Rim give medium-difficulty tracks.
K'gari (Fraser Island) is the standout day-and-overnight destination from Brisbane — a 2.5-hour drive to Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay and a barge crossing onto the world's largest sand island. The Sunshine Coast Hinterland (Mapleton, Montville, Kondalilla areas) has limited 4WD terrain but gives a pleasant forest drive.
The Glasshouse Mountains hinterland, the D'Aguilar National Park network, and the Conondale Range tracks are all accessible without permits (apart from national park fees). Active plantation forestry areas require permits — check before entering commercial pine blocks.
