About Skippers Canyon
Skippers Canyon Road is one of New Zealand's most famous (and most discussed) 4WD routes. Cut into the schist walls of the Shotover gorge above Queenstown, it's 14 km of narrow, unsealed shelf road with sheer drops to the river below, no guardrails, and very limited passing room. It's also one of the most scenic routes in the South Island.
The route begins at the historic Skippers suspension bridge, then climbs to the old goldfields township of Skippers — a few stone ruins, the restored Skippers school, and views back down the gorge that justify every tight corner. The road continues to the Upper Shotover through increasingly dramatic terrain.
