About Snowy Mountains
The NSW Snowy Mountains offer the state's most rugged alpine 4WD terrain. Tracks near Khancoban, Cabramurra, and the upper Murray River catchment combine altitude, remoteness, and significant terrain difficulty. The Snowy Mountains Hwy connects the major access points to a network of unsealed tracks managed by Kosciuszko National Park.
The Pilot Wilderness area, the Dead Horse Gap approach, and the Cascades Track near Kiandra are among the recognised routes. Many tracks here are accessible only in the warmer months — snow closes the upper routes from June through September with some variability. The higher-altitude Snowy Mountains tracks routinely receive more snow than the Victorian High Country equivalents.
