About Snowy Mountains
The NSW Snowy Mountains offer the state's most rugged alpine 4WD terrain. Tracks near Khancoban, Cabramurra, and the upper Murray River catchment combine altitude, remoteness, and significant terrain difficulty. The Snowy Mountains Hwy connects the major access points to a network of unsealed tracks managed by Kosciuszko National Park.
The Pilot Wilderness area, the Dead Horse Gap approach, and the Cascades Track near Kiandra are among the recognised routes. Many tracks here are accessible only in the warmer months — snow closes the upper routes from June through September with some variability. The higher-altitude Snowy Mountains tracks routinely receive more snow than the Victorian High Country equivalents.
NPWS vehicle access permits are required for Kosciuszko National Park. Recovery gear is essential — the Snowy Mountains back-country is remote and recovery times can exceed several hours. Carry a satellite communicator on any track far from the sealed roads.

Frequently asked questions
When do Snowy Mountains 4WD tracks open after winter?
Most high-altitude Snowy Mountains tracks open between October and November depending on snowmelt. Tracks near Khancoban and Cabramurra open earlier than those near Kiandra and the Main Range. The NPWS Kosciuszko National Park page posts current access conditions. Always check before heading out — late spring snow is not unusual and can close tracks that look open on the map.
