4WD Trails in Manawatū-Whanganui

Manawatū-Whanganui is the largest North Island region and contains some of the most varied 4WD terrain on the island. The Whanganui River back-country, the Ruahine and Tararua Ranges, and the central plateau fringe all sit within the region.

The Whanganui National Park river track and the upper Whanganui valley roads offer genuine back-country 4WD. The Ruahine Forest Park has vehicle access from the Manawatū side. The Rangiwahia and Ohinewairua back-roads give mid-difficulty driving in good country.
