4WDing near Christchurch
Christchurch sits on the Canterbury Plains with the Southern Alps 90 minutes to the west and the Banks Peninsula 45 minutes to the east. The mountain access via Arthur's Pass (SH73) and the Inland Scenic Route (SH72) opens up the upper Waimakariri gorge tracks, the Lees Valley, and the Hakatere Conservation Park.
The Hakatere Conservation Park (Lake Heron area, 2 hours via the Inland Route) is the standout Canterbury 4WD destination from Christchurch — a tussock high-country park with river crossings and varied terrain. The Lees Valley road from Oxford (1.5 hours) is more forgiving and gives excellent back-country feel without extreme conditions.
Banks Peninsula (Port Levy, Le Bons Bay back-roads) gives mild coastal back-road driving close to the city. The Summit Road around the crater rim above Lyttelton is partly unsealed. Year-round access is possible in the lower terrain; alpine tracks above 700 metres close June–October.
