4WDing near Rotorua
Rotorua sits at the centre of a region with extensive pine plantation forestry, the Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park to the south-east, and the Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park to the west. The forestry network around Rotorua is substantial but requires permits from commercial block managers for most of the active plantation land.
The Whirinaki Conservation Park (40 minutes south-east via Minginui) has DOC-managed road access into the edge of the park without a vehicle permit for day use. The Kaingaroa plateau forestry blocks give longer routes for those with the appropriate forestry access permits.
Year-round driving is possible around Rotorua — no alpine closures in this region. Summer gives the most reliable forestry track conditions. Heavy rain can close active plantation roads without notice. The Rotorua lakes district back-roads (Lake Rotoma, Okataina, Tarawera) give accessible unsealed driving close to the city.
