About Coromandel Peninsula
The Coromandel Peninsula is the most accessible quality 4WD destination for Auckland-based drivers — 1.5 hours from the city and a network of forestry access roads that traverse the Coromandel Range spine. The terrain is steep, forested, and satisfying without being extreme.
The main Coromandel 4WD routes thread through the Coromandel Forest Park and the commercial forestry blocks on the eastern and western faces. The Kauaeranga Valley access (Thames side) gives the most accessible DOC-managed 4WD entry point. The Tapu-Coroglen Road (one of New Zealand's most winding roads) connects the coasts with an unsealed middle section.
