Medium 4WD Tracks
1,964 medium tracks in Victoria.
Medium 4WD tracks require a capable vehicle with good low-range gearing, reasonable ground clearance, and a driver who is comfortable with slow-speed technical driving. You are likely to encounter steeper gradients, rougher surface, and deeper crossings than on Easy tracks — and the consequences of a mistake are higher.
Most medium tracks are achievable in a well-maintained standard 4WD like a Prado, Patrol, HiLux or Ranger with all-terrain tyres. Lockers are not required for Medium, but a rear locker is useful in wet conditions or on loose sidehills. A winch starts to become worth considering on the harder end of Medium terrain.
What to expect on a Medium 4WD track
- Rougher surface with rocks, ruts, and loose material
- Steeper gradients, some sections at 25–35%
- Water crossings up to 400–500 mm in typical conditions
- Sidehill traverses and loose off-camber sections
- Narrower single-lane tracks in places
Minimum vehicle requirements for Medium tracks
A capable high-clearance 4WD with working low-range gearing, good ground clearance, and all-terrain tyres in good condition. A complete recovery kit is essential — snatch strap, shackles, traction boards, hi-lift jack, and a shovel. A rear locker is a significant advantage in wet or loose conditions.
Driver experience needed
You should be comfortable engaging low range, managing wheel speed on loose and steep terrain, and stopping to assess a crossing or obstacle before committing. If you have never recovered a stuck vehicle before, do a medium track with someone who has first.
