About Perth Hills
The Perth Hills extend east and south-east of Perth city, and their state forest network provides the closest 4WD terrain to a major Australian capital city. The jarrah and marri forests of the Darling Scarp have a significant network of forestry roads and 4WD tracks accessible to standard high-clearance vehicles.
The Mundaring area, the Helena Valley fringe, the Serpentine National Park back-roads, and the Dwellingup Forest area to the south are the primary destinations. The Dwellingup forestry tracks in particular have well-defined routes of varying difficulty. No permits are required for state forest day use in most areas.
Year-round driving is possible — the Perth Hills don't have alpine closures. Winter rains (June–August) make clay tracks slippery. Summer is the driest period but fire restrictions can close forest tracks during extreme fire danger periods — check with DFES and DBCA before going in summer.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best 4WD day trip from Perth?
The Dwellingup Forest area (about 90 minutes south of Perth) offers the most complete day-trip experience — a range of tracks from Easy to Medium, established campgrounds, and good track marking. The Mundaring Weir area and the Julimar Conservation Park to the north give shorter options. Check current fire restrictions in summer before visiting any forested area — DFES and DBCA both list current closure zones.
