About Gibb River Road
The Gibb River Road is 660 km of unsealed road connecting Derby to Kununurra through the heart of the Kimberley. It's not extreme technical driving — but the distances, the river crossings, the corrugations, and the remoteness add up to a serious undertaking that rewards preparation.
The main track is accompanied by a series of highly worthwhile side routes: Bell Gorge, Tunnel Creek, Windjana Gorge, Manning Gorge, Barnett River Gorge, Adcock Gorge, Drysdale River, and the Mitchell Falls Plateau road. Each adds time and fuel consumption. Most groups allow 7–10 days end-to-end with the key side tracks included.
Fuel is available at several stations and roadhouses along the road — Mt Barnett Roadhouse (500 km from Derby) is the critical mid-point stop. Not all stations fuel all vehicle types; check in advance. The road surfaces corrugated and erodes through the season — early dry season (May–June) is generally the smoothest.

Frequently asked questions
Can a standard Prado or Patrol complete the Gibb River Road?
Yes — the Gibb River Road is regularly driven in standard high-clearance 4WDs like Prados, Patrols, and HiLuxes without significant modifications. A snorkel is strongly recommended for the river crossings (Pentecost River, Durack crossings). Long-range fuel is a significant advantage — plan for at least 300 km range from each reliable fuel stop. Low-profile road tyres are a genuine disadvantage; all-terrain or mud-terrain is appropriate. Ensure your recovery kit is complete and you know how to use it.
