4WDing near Adelaide
Adelaide is the gateway to South Australia's outback driving, and the day-trip and weekend 4WD options within 200 km are genuinely varied. The Adelaide Hills give the closest easy terrain — the Mount Lofty Ranges have fire trails and back-roads accessible to standard 4WDs within 30–60 minutes of the CBD.
The Barossa Valley fringe and the Clare Valley have some unsealed back-roads suited to capable 4WDs. The Riverland east of Loxton gives longer day-trip options with river red gum country. The Flinders Ranges (3.5–4 hours) is the first big destination — Hawker is the logical staging town.
SA state forest tracks are generally free for day use. National park entry fees apply at Belair, Cleland, and Flinders Ranges. The desert parks requiring a Desert Parks Pass start north of Port Augusta — those are expedition country, not day trips from Adelaide.
