4WDing near Queenstown
Queenstown has more serious 4WD terrain within 30 minutes than almost any other New Zealand city. Skippers Canyon is 20 minutes from Queenstown centre. The Cardrona Valley access roads are 30 minutes over the Crown Range. The Nevis Valley (via Cromwell) is 45 minutes. The Macetown Track from Arrowtown is 25 minutes.
Skippers Canyon Road is the most talked-about — narrow, shelf-cut, spectacular, and contractually off-limits in rental vehicles. In a personally-owned 4WD it's achievable for a confident driver who has done their research. The Macetown Track from Arrowtown to the old gold-rush townsite is more accessible and gives dramatic Arrow River gorge scenery.
Most Queenstown-area 4WD tracks are seasonal — alpine routes above 800 metres close from approximately June through October. Winter visitors can still access lower valley tracks (Macetown in good conditions, some Cardrona basin roads) but the Nevis, Skippers in snow, and the Crown Range back-roads are best avoided in winter.
