About Skippers Canyon
Skippers Canyon Road is one of New Zealand's most famous (and most discussed) 4WD routes. Cut into the schist walls of the Shotover gorge above Queenstown, it's 14 km of narrow, unsealed shelf road with sheer drops to the river below, no guardrails, and very limited passing room. It's also one of the most scenic routes in the South Island.
The route begins at the historic Skippers suspension bridge, then climbs to the old goldfields township of Skippers — a few stone ruins, the restored Skippers school, and views back down the gorge that justify every tight corner. The road continues to the Upper Shotover through increasingly dramatic terrain.
Rental vehicles are contractually prohibited on Skippers Canyon Road under virtually all standard NZ agreements. In a personally-owned 4WD with a driver who has done their research, it is achievable — but not for first-timers on a tight schedule. Plan to pass carefully, reverse for oncoming traffic at proper passing bays, and never attempt it in a large-wheelbase vehicle or with a trailer.

Frequently asked questions
How long does Skippers Canyon take?
Allow 3–4 hours return from the Coronet Peak turnoff to explore Skippers Canyon properly — drive in, time at the ruins and viewpoints, drive out. The road demands full attention so rushing it defeats the purpose. Start early to avoid meeting tour operators' vehicles (they run large vehicles on tour schedules and need passing priority). The road is open year-round but check weather conditions — rain makes the schist road surface more challenging.
