4WDing near Canberra
Canberra sits between the NSW Snowy Mountains and the NSW Southern Tablelands, and both directions offer accessible 4WD terrain within 90 minutes. The Namadgi National Park to the south-west of the ACT itself has unsealed access tracks — it borders Kosciuszko National Park.
To the south-east, the Brindabella Ranges and the Tidbinbilla fringe give close easy-medium terrain. The Snowy Mountains proper (Khancoban, Kosciuszko) are 2–3 hours. The Monaro Tablelands towards the south coast have some pleasant back-country driving on station roads.
Canberra gets cold winters and the higher-altitude tracks around Namadgi and the Brindabellas can hold snow from June through August. The ACT has its own parks network and access restrictions — check ACT Parks and Conservation for Namadgi conditions before going.
