4WD Trails in Manawatū-Whanganui

Manawatū-Whanganui is the largest North Island region and contains some of the most varied 4WD terrain on the island. The Whanganui River back-country, the Ruahine and Tararua Ranges, and the central plateau fringe all sit within the region.

The Whanganui National Park river track and the upper Whanganui valley roads offer genuine back-country 4WD. The Ruahine Forest Park has vehicle access from the Manawatū side. The Rangiwahia and Ohinewairua back-roads give mid-difficulty driving in good country.

Year-round driving is possible in the lower country. Alpine tracks in the Ruahines and Tararua ranges can hold snow from June through September. River valley tracks require flood awareness during wet periods.
