The main Coromandel 4WD routes thread through the Coromandel Forest Park and the commercial forestry blocks on the eastern and western faces. The Kauaeranga Valley access (Thames side) gives the most accessible DOC-managed 4WD entry point. The Tapu-Coroglen Road (one of New Zealand's most winding roads) connects the coasts with an unsealed middle section.
Year-round driving is generally possible in the Coromandel, with summer the most reliable. Forestry access roads in commercial blocks require permits from the relevant block manager. Check before entering — active logging operations close access without notice. DOC areas in the Forest Park do not require vehicle permits for day use.
