4WDing near Wellington
Wellington is the best South Island gateway city for 4WD even though it sits on the North Island — the Interislander and Bluebridge ferries connect to Picton in 3.5 hours, opening the entire top of the South Island. On the North Island side, the Remutaka Forest Park is the closest quality terrain, 30 minutes from the CBD.
The Remutaka Forest Park (Catchpool Valley and the historic Remutaka Incline access area) has well-maintained forest tracks suitable for capable high-clearance 4WDs. The Ōtaki Forks access road in the Tararua Forest Park is 60–90 minutes north. The Wainuiomata Regional Park has easy tracks suitable for first-time drivers.
Wellington's wind does not significantly affect 4WD driving but heavy rain (Wellington averages 120+ rain days per year) can make clay tracks slippery. Year-round access is possible in the lower terrain. Always check Greater Wellington Regional Council conditions for the Remutaka and Tararua tracks.
